Social connectedness and depressive symptoms in community-dwelling older adults in Korea: The moderating effect of community attachment

Abstract
This study is to examine the effect of social connectedness on depressive symptoms among older adults living in the community and to examine the moderating effect of community attachment on the relationship between them. For this purpose, a research model was established based on previous studies on the social connectedness, depressive symptoms, and community attachment of older adults. The subjects of this study were 621 persons more than 65 years old living in Busan Metropolitan City in South Korea. Data analyses were conducted using Mplus 7.2 and SPSS 23.0. Social connectedness of older adults negatively affected depressive symptoms.
And the moderating effect of community attachment on the relationship between social connectedness and depression was statistically significant. Suggestions to improve social connectedness and community attachment for older people¡¯s depression prevention were suggested, and practical implications and future research were presented.
